IRVINE, Calif. - March 4, 1999 - Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Network Products Division (TAIS NPD) today announced that its cable modems have earned Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS) certification from CableLabs, a cable industry consortium.

DOCSIS is an industry specification that defines technical requirements for products at both the cable subscriber's location and the cable operator's equipment. The standard is designed to ensure the development of cable modems offering plug-and-play operation on any cable system.

"The cable modem certification initiative is helping to establish a new interoperable network based on cable's big pipe capability," said Dr. Richard R. Green, president and CEO, CableLabs. "Toshiba's hard work and success in attaining certification is helping the cable industry move forward into delivery of a range of emerging Internet, video and multimedia services to its customers."

"We're pleased to achieve this key milestone and be among the first vendors to secure DOCSIS certification," said Michael J. Knudsen, vice president and general manager of TAIS NPD. "As one of the early players in the development of the DOCSIS specification, we're excited that our commitment to supporting this important industry standard is coming to fruition."

A cable industry pioneer, Toshiba has been developing cable modems for three years, and has been involved in the cable business for 10 years. The company has shipped thousands of cable modems to date.

Since DOCSIS is an industry standard, Toshiba cable modems are designed to interface with DOCSIS-compatible head-end equipment, such as Cisco's Universal Broadband Routers. "We applaud Toshiba's success in achieving DOCSIS certification at this critical juncture in the cable industry," said Paul Bosco, general manager of Cisco's Cable Product and Solutions Group. "We're working very closely with Toshiba to ensure compatibility between our products, and to promote the enhanced features and capabilities outlined in the DOCSIS standard."

According to industry analyst Dataquest, the cable modem market is expected to grow from 492,000 units in 1998 to 2.4 million by 2002. The certification process is an essential part of widespread consumer adoption of cable modem technology.

"Our cable modem offering clearly provides customers with a superior solution for high-speed Internet access," added Toshiba's Knudsen. "In addition to our technology leadership, Toshiba's well-established sales channel will be a key advantage as cable modems expand into the retail arena."

Toshiba's cable modems offer high performance, easy installation and interoperability with all DOCSIS compatible products. Backed by Toshiba's worldwide customer support, the DOCSIS certified cable modems are available now.
